On 1 August 2016, Paul Kruger embarked on a journey that would become about far more than selling property. Ten years later, he reflects on a decade with the Seeff brand, the remarkable growth of Seeff Hermanus, the people who made it possible and a community his family is proud to call home.
In 2016, Paul Kruger was presented with the opportunity to acquire one of the flagship licences within the Seeff Property Group: Seeff Hermanus.
For Paul, who already had many years of experience within the Seeff brand and the property industry, the opportunity represented both an exciting challenge and an enormous responsibility.
On 1 August 2016, he officially took over the Seeff Hermanus licence.
What followed was a remarkable ten-year journey.
Building on a Proud Legacy
Seeff already had a strong and respected presence in Hermanus. The objective was therefore never simply to change what existed, but to build on that foundation and take the business into its next chapter.
Together with an exceptional management team, property practitioners, rental specialists and support staff, Paul set about strengthening every part of the business.
Over the following decade, Seeff Hermanus grew its sales, rental portfolio and overall market presence to new heights, while continually investing in its people, technology, marketing and client service.
One of the significant developments during this period was the establishment and expansion of the Seeff Hermanus Holiday Rentals division.
What started as a new business opportunity has grown into one of the largest holiday rental operations in the Hermanus area, helping property owners unlock the potential of their homes while welcoming visitors from across South Africa and abroad to this extraordinary part of the Western Cape.
The long-term rental division has similarly developed into a cornerstone of the business. According to PayProp statistics, Seeff Hermanus has achieved the highest rental market share in the local market - an achievement that reflects years of consistent service, relationship building and trust between landlords, tenants and the Seeff team.
A Decade of Recognition
Success, however, has never been measured only in transactions.
Over the past ten years, Seeff Hermanus and its team have received numerous accolades within the Seeff Property Group, recognising achievements across sales, rentals, market share, marketing, leadership and overall business performance.
These have included recognition such as Licensee of the Year, Highest Market Share and Best Rental Agency, among many other awards achieved by the office and its people.
Paul has also personally been honoured with the prestigious Chairman’s Award as well as recognition as a Brand Ambassador — accolades that carry special significance after his many years of association with the Seeff brand.
For Paul, however, these awards belong as much to the people around him as they do to any individual.
“No business achieves anything meaningful because of one person. Whatever we have accomplished over the past ten years is the result of an extraordinary group of people who believed in what we were building and who continue to give their best to our clients and our community every day.”
Record-Breaking Property Transactions
The decade has also produced some extraordinary milestones in the Hermanus property market.
Seeff Hermanus has been involved in numerous high-value and record-breaking transactions across the region, including a remarkable R105 million sale in Voëlklip.
While headline transactions attract attention, Paul believes the real measure of a property business lies in the thousands of individual journeys behind the numbers.
Every property represents something different to its owner.
It may be a young family's first home, a retirement dream, an investment property, a holiday home overlooking Walker Bay, or the sale of a family property filled with decades of memories.
That understanding has remained central to the philosophy of Seeff Hermanus.
Property is ultimately about people.*
More Than a Property Business
An equally important part of the Seeff Hermanus story has been its relationship with the broader community.
Over the past decade, the business and its team have actively supported local schools, old-age homes, welfare organisations, sporting initiatives and numerous community projects.
For Paul, being a leading business in a town such as Hermanus brings with it a responsibility to contribute to the community that supports that business.
The Seeff brand may be visible on property boards throughout the area, but Paul believes its most meaningful presence is often found away from property transactions — in schools, charities, community initiatives and the everyday lives of the people of the Overberg.
A Place That Became Home
Looking back, Paul says the greatest reward of the move to Hermanus cannot be measured on a sales report or an awards stage.
It is what Hermanus has given his family.
“The last ten years have been an overwhelmingly positive experience for me and my family. We came here because of a business opportunity, but Hermanus became our home.
Raising children in a town with excellent schools, surrounded by mountains, ocean and nature, and within a community where families can enjoy an exceptional quality of life has made the decision to move to Hermanus particularly rewarding.
And then there are the friendships.
“Some of the greatest gifts of the past ten years have been the friendships we have made. Clients became friends, colleagues became extended family, and Hermanus became far more than the place where we work. It became the place where we belong.”
The Power of a Super Brand
After ten years as licensee of Seeff Hermanus and an even longer association with Seeff — Paul remains deeply appreciative of what the brand has meant to his career.
Founded on relationships, trust and an entrepreneurial culture, Seeff has provided the platform from which local business owners and property professionals can build businesses deeply connected to their communities.
Paul describes Seeff simply as a “SUPER BRAND.”
It is a brand that has allowed him to grow professionally, build businesses, develop people and participate in an industry that continues to evolve at an extraordinary pace.
Yet, after a decade, one lesson stands above the rest:
Brands create opportunities, but people create businesses.
The success of Seeff Hermanus belongs to its management team, property practitioners, rental and holiday rental teams, administrative staff, clients, landlords, tenants, buyers, sellers, suppliers, community partners and the countless people who have supported the business over the past decade.
The Next Chapter
Ten years is an important milestone, but it is not a finishing line.
The property industry is changing rapidly. Technology, artificial intelligence, data and changing consumer expectations are reshaping how people buy, sell, rent, invest in and manage property.
For Seeff Hermanus, the next decade will therefore be about combining innovation with something that technology can never replace: trusted human relationships.
Paul believes the opportunity ahead is every bit as exciting as the one he saw when he arrived in Hermanus in August 2016.
“I am incredibly grateful for the past ten years to Seeff, to our extraordinary team, to our clients, to the Hermanus community and, especially, to my family for sharing this journey with me.”
“If I look back at what we have achieved together, I feel proud. But when I look forward at what is still possible, I am even more excited.”
Here’s to ten remarkable years of Seeff Hermanus and to the next chapter of property, people and purpose in one of the most beautiful places in South Africa.
