Hermanus Carols - Cherish the Season with Song

Category Area Focus

This year's Hermanus Carols promises to be even greater than before - brought to you by the incredible people of the Rotary Club of Hermanus. With an exciting new location, the Attie Bishop Field - next to the Hermanus Sports Club and above the Hermanus High School - evenings will be filled with talented entertainment to heighten the spirit of things.

A family affair, taking place on Saturday and Sunday the 17th and 18th of December this year, will have the addition of pre-carols entertainment taking place from 18h00.  On both evenings there will be a vibey Marimba band, Handevat Marimba, from Kleinmond as well as performances by the Dance Studio's House of Performance and the Just Dance Academy.

On Saturday Takura Terry, singer, songwriter, guitarist and percussionist will be performing to delight the crowd with his incredible vocal range. On Sunday Debi West will enthral the audience with her saxophone skills. This will be followed with a nativity pageant produced by René Dewar starting at 20h00. In this pageant, a narrator tells the story of the birth of Christ, with performers enacting the scenes and carols sung by a choir - and spectators - with the melodic backing of an orchestra.

The choir is formed by talented people from Zwelihle, the Holy New Generation choir. The orchestra has been ensembled by a very versatile musician who will be the event conductor, Hein Attwood. He will be leading both the choir and orchestra into harmony and one will not help but feel inspired to join in. Annemarie Rautenbach has assisted him with accompaniment and the choir. These are all locals from the Overstrand community, including the musicians, who have graciously donated their time.

The Hermanus wave, where lighting is switched off to see only the glow of the audience's lights moving to and fro, to the beautiful song of Silent Night, will close the event. This year will get with the program and go digital, meaning no paper song sheets and no candles/glowsticks, and therefore no harm to the environment. Make sure your phones are charged; the wave will be done using cellphone lights and once you purchase tickets, you will get a link to a downloadable song sheet. Tickets are available from Webtickets at R125 for adults, R75 for scholars and R25 for pre-schoolers.

Bring your own picnic with drinks and snacks, as well as a blanket for comfy seating. There will be a coffee and cooldrink vendor for those who wish to purchase beverages at the event. A tent will cover the stage to cater for unforeseen weather conditions and ensure that "the show goes on", and in case of loadshedding, the wonderful folks at ProActive Gym will be supplying the use of their generator.

This event is made possible for the community, by the community. Thank you goes out to the Hermanus Old Boys Club and Hermanus Primary School for the premises and Hermanus Sports Club for the use of their restrooms. And thank you to the Rotary Club of Hermanus for organising this spectacular fundraising event and for the wonderful work they do for the community.

For a magical and musical transition from day into starry night, to usher in the festive time and remember the reason for the season, mark this event on your calendar. Another heart-warming occasion that keeps the flame burning strong in Hermanus.
