Padel - Booming New Sport to Hit Hermanus

Category Area Focus

The Hermanus Sports Club is excited to present a booming new sport to delight Hermies. A sport that's currently gaining traction fast, it's popping up in many of our major cities and towns in South Africa.

It's one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, and it's oodles of fun for everyone. Much like tennis with a similar court and net, Padel uses the same scoring system and is played in doubles; while being similar to squash with glass walls to bounce the ball off of.

Great for socials and fast-paced, a match takes less than an hour - an intense hour. Whether you enjoy a social game or compete in a match, you'll burn around 600 calories in just one seriously fun hour.

The game is easy to grasp. In the words of John Cowan, chairperson of the Hermanus Tennis Club and part of the HSC Steering Committee, it's "easy to learn, but difficult to master". Challenge accepted, anyone?

The first court in South Africa was built in Paarl in late 2019, and since has expanded to 19 different locations to date. The Hermanus courts will be one of the first 25 sites in SA - to enthral our lucky locals. Currently under construction, the HSC is aiming for December to launch the 4 brand new Padel courts, with a local company building them to perfection.

The HSC also offers a host of other sports and fitness opportunities including Tennis, Squash, Netball, and a gym with revolutionary indoor bikes. They have social quick sports rounds that include a mix of activities (including darts and table tennis) where scores are tallied up at the end to announce the ultimate winners.

In addition, the HSC is neighbours to the Hermanus Cricket Club, BMX track, Skate Park, and close to Marina's Dance Education Centre - all found along Jose Burman Drive.

For those that aren't fitness-inclined, they have many other activities, including their Clubhouse Restaurant & Bar which hosts the chess club as well as quizzes, live entertainment and DJs - keep an eye on their Facebook page for more information on upcoming events.

So much to do, in one great location with a backdrop of magnificent mountains, and adding even more value with the brand new Padel courts. Another first for Hermanus, and another of a multitude of reasons that we love this town.
